How the estimate works

The calculator converts the board’s actual finished dimensions and length to cubic meters, then multiplies that volume by a representative density for the selected wood. The density is adjusted approximately for the entered moisture content relative to a 12% planning baseline.

Nominal size is not volume

A nominal 2×4 is commonly 1.5 × 3.5 inches when dry and dressed, so using 2 × 4 in a volume formula would substantially overstate weight. Select a standard nominal size above and WUDIM uses the corresponding actual dry dimensions from the current PS 20-25 table.

Payload decisions: lumber can be wetter, denser or treated. Do not use this calculator as the sole basis for a legal vehicle payload or lifting limit.

Common reasons actual weight differs

  • Species and even individual trees have different densities.
  • Green, wet or pressure-treated lumber can weigh much more than dry stock.
  • Dressed dimensions can vary within allowed tolerances.
  • Engineered or laminated products should use their manufacturer’s specifications.
